What is a Vehicle Identification Number?

The Vehicle Identification Number is the vehicle's fingerprint code that is unique to every automobile. No car has the same VIN code.

Why is a VIN code needed during an OBD2 Scan?

Your vehicle's VIN is necessary because it allows the system to know your vehicle's make, model, year, and manufacturer. Placing your exact VIN code will also help determine accurate, specific OBD2 scan results such as the P1XXX code or Mode 6 in your vehicle.

When you are using an OBD2 Scanner, you must input find your Vehicle Identification Number from the car you are scanning. Select 'Scan VIN Using Camera' to automatically register your VIN by taking a picture of your VIN on your vehicle or select 'Enter VIN manually' to manually input your VIN number.

How to find your Vehicle Identification Number?

You can find your VIN code in:

  • Driver's Side Dashboard - look at the corner of your Vehicle's dashboard where it meets the windshield.
  • Driver's Side Door or Door Jamb - VIN code is printed on a sticker and attached to the location.
