Innova 7111: Transmission Fluid Temperature

    Purpose

To explain how to view Transmission Fluid Temperature while using the Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet.

    Introduction

The Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet lets you view and/or record Transmission Fluid Temperature. It is a measure of the temperature of the fluid that lubricates and cools the transmission in a vehicle. The Transmission Fluid Temperature is typically monitored by a sensor that is installed within the transmission, and the information is sent to the vehicle's computer, which can display the temperature on the dashboard or in a diagnostic tool. It can also be used to monitor the performance of the transmission system. For example, if the temperature is consistently high, it could indicate that the transmission is working harder than it should be, which could be caused by a slipping clutch or a low fluid level.

Transmission Fluid Temperature is a valuable function that helps car repair technicians identify problems with a vehicle's transmission system, diagnose the cause of those problems, and make the necessary repairs to keep the vehicle running smoothly.

    Procedure

Step 1 - Connect Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet to the vehicle and select 'Workshop Tools'

First, connect the Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet to your vehicle via the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) to retrieve the vehicle's information such as Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model.

Then, select the 'Workshop Tools' function.

Step 2 – Select the ‘Transmission Fluid Temperature’ function

Tap the ‘Transmission Fluid Temperature' button to view and/or record this parameter as Live Data.

Step 3 – View Transmission Fluid Temperature information

The Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet will show the current temperature of the transmission fluid as seen in the image.

Click the box to the left of the parameter. A ‘checkmark’ will be shown to confirm your selection.

Tap the ‘View’ button to view the real-time value of the parameter that you selected.

Step 4 - Performing the 'Record function'

Tap the ‘Record’ button to record the real-time value of the parameter.

Tap the ‘Stop Record’ button to finish the record function.

Tap the ‘Yes, Save Live Data’ button to save the recorded data when you finish and want to save it.

Tap the ‘No, Erase Live Data’ button to finish the record function when you don’t want to save the recorded data.

Step 5 - Playback the recorded data

    Select the ‘Previous Vehicles’ function.

    Tap the ‘Live Data’ button.

Select the recorded Live Data based on the date, time, and vehicle information that you want to review.

Tap the ‘Play’ button to start.

When viewing recorded Transmission Fluid Temperature Data, look for any irregularities in Parameter Identification (PID) values information. If the PID is not within specification or irregularities are detected, follow the procedures in the vehicle's service repair manual to perform additional troubleshooting and repair.

Transmission fluid operates best within the temperature range of 160°F to 200°F (71°C to 93°C). Any temperature beyond this range could cause a series of adverse effects. Subsequently, the seals may harden, plates may slip, and both the seals and clutches may burn out. Carbon may also form, and ultimately, these issues can lead to failure.
