Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech: Freeze Frame Data

    Purpose

To explain how to view your Freeze Frame Data using the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool.

    Introduction

Freeze Frame (FF) Data is a single snapshot of critical engine operating conditions; it is usually stored with the first Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) that the computer system identified as the reason for the malfunction. The FF Data feature displays a list of Parameter Identifiers (PIDs) such as engine revolution per minute (RPM), vehicle speed, coolant temperature, intake air temperature, fuel pressure and throttle position, which can help identify the root cause of a vehicle system problem or fault. Mechanics can use this information to diagnose and troubleshoot problems with a vehicle's systems and components. It is essential to read the FF data as soon as possible because FF Data from the first DTC may be overwritten by FF Data from a later DTC if that DTC has a higher priority, and you will lose the older data.

The Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool can access a comprehensive view of the vehicle's conditions during a malfunction with the Freeze Frame Data.

    Procedure

Step 1 - Connect Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool to the vehicle and select 'OBD2 Diagnostics'

First, connect the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool to your vehicle via the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) to retrieve the vehicle's information, such as Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model.

Then, select the 'OBD2 Diagnostic' function.

Step 2 – Check the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) DTC and Freeze Frame Data

The red MIL ON status icon indicates a problem with emissions and is the main reason why the vehicle will fail an emissions inspection. The fault code that triggers the MIL and its recording conditions (Freeze Frame Data) are crucial for the repair process.

Select the 'Freeze Frame' button to view Freeze Frame Data.

Step 3 - View the result

The data results will be shown in the table as the image.

Freeze Frame Data eliminates guesswork and provides a clear and accurate picture of the vehicle's condition, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and unnecessary repairs. Each Freeze Frame Parameter in generic OBD2 has its own significance in quickly identifying the source of faults. Examples:

    • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gives a reading of the temperature of the engine’s coolant.
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) gives the pressure inside the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine.
    • Calculated Load (Calc Load) is a percentage value based on airflow and engine speed.
    • ...
