Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech: OBD Mode Test

    Purpose

To explain how to view OBD Mode Test using the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool.

    Introduction

Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool supports On-Board Diagnostic (OBD2) functions and is essential to check your vehicle before performing an Emissions/Smoke Check. This function allows checking the status of several emissions-related systems including Check Engine Light (MIL) status, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC), emission monitors, vehicle info, and others. In addition, you have access to real-time solutions to troubleshoot and fix automotive issues quickly.

    Procedure

Step 1 - Connect Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool to the vehicle and select 'OBD2 Diagnostics'

First, connect the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool to your vehicle via the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) to retrieve the vehicle's information, such as Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model.

Then, select the 'OBD2 Diagnostic' function.

Step 2 - Perform the OBD Mode Test

Tap on the 'OBD Mode Tests' at the top of the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool Scan Tool to perform the various available emissions readiness tests. When available, these tests will return test values with acceptable ranges, and/or a pass or fail state, so you can determine if a system is functioning outside of its optimal range.

    Available tests include:

    • Mode $01: Inspection/ Maintenance Monitor Test displays the monitor readiness status for gasoline and diesel engines.
    • Mode $05: Oxygen Sensor displays oxygen sensor monitoring test results.
    • Mode $06: Onboard Diagnostic Mode Test displays the on-board monitoring test results for specific monitored systems that the vehicle performs to determine when an engine code should be triggered.
    • Mode $08: Evaporative Test allows you to perform bidirectional control of an onboard system or test. Please note that the test is currently limited to some evaporative emissions systems and allows the user to perform leak detection testing.
    Step 3 - Perform the ‘I/M Readiness Status - $01, $41’ function

    Tap the ‘I/M Readiness Status - $01, $41’ function.

The Since DTCs Cleared - $01 indicates the status of the monitors since the DTCs are erased.

This Drive Cycle - $41 indicates the status of the monitors since the current drive cycle began.

Note: If the vehicle under test does not support Since DTCs Cleared - $01 or This Drive Cycle - $41, a warning message displays 'This vehicle does not support this monitor type'.

    Step 4 - Perform the ‘O2 Sensor Monitor - $05’ function

Tap the ‘O2 Sensor Monitor - $05’ function.

The Oxygen Sensor Monitor Mode $05 gives customers detailed information about the oxygen sensor performance in the vehicle.

Note: Service Mode $05 is not supported in ISO 15765-4 (CAN) applications. Vehicle might be from 2008.

Step 5 - Perform the ‘OBD Monitor Test - $06’ function

Tap the ‘OBD Monitor Test - $06’ function.

The OBD Monitor Test Mode $06 runs diagnostic tests on emissions-related powertrain components and systems. The Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Scan Tool retrieves the results of these tests from the vehicle’s computer memory providing pass or fail results for the most recent tests. If the vehicle under test does not support OBD Monitor Test, a warning message displays 'OBD Monitor Test is not supported'.

    Step 6 - Perform the ‘Request Control On-Board System - $08’ function

Tap the ‘Request Control On-Board System - $08’ function.

Next, select the type of engine.

The Request Control On-Board System - $08 allows customers to initiate testing of specific vehicle components or systems. The tool sends a command to the vehicle’s computer and retrieves the results once the test is complete. The specific components and systems available for testing may vary depending on the manufacturer’s make and model of the vehicle.

    Summary

The Emission Monitor function is increasingly important as automotive technology evolves and emission control becomes stricter. The function allows car owners to complete the drive cycle on their own, and this article provides guidance on how to check Emission Monitors in a vehicle and drive cycles for incomplete monitors.
