Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector: Powertrain Live Data

    Purpose

To explain to you on monitoring, graphing, recording, and playback of Powertrain Live Data while using the Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool.

    Introduction

The Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool lets you view and/or record 'real-time' Live Data. This information includes values (voltage, revolution per minute (RPM), temperature, speed, etc.) and system status information (open loop, closed loop, fuel system status, etc.). These are the signals used by the vehicle's computer to calculate and make system adjustments and corrections. The value of Live Data that ECU supplies to the Scan Tool for each sensor, actuator, switch, etc. is called Parameter Identification (PID) Data. Each PID has a set of operating characteristics and features that serve to identify it.

Moreover, you can customize and graph the number of PIDs that you wish to display on the Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool.

Warning: If the vehicle must be driven in order to perform a troubleshooting procedure, always have a second person to help you. One person should drive the vehicle while the other person observes the Scan Tool's data. Trying to drive and operate the Scan Tool at the same time is dangerous and could cause a serious traffic accident.

    Procedure

Step 1 - Connect Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool to the vehicle and select 'OBD2 Diagnostics' function

First, connect the Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool to your vehicle via the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) to retrieve the vehicle's information, such as VIN and On-Board Diagnostic (OBD2) information.

There are two options to access 'OBD2 Diagnostics':

    • Option 1 (AutoLink function is OFF): From the Home Screen, select 'OBD2 Diagnostics' section and press the OK button.

    • Option 2 (AutoLink function is ON): From the 'OBD2 Control Display' screen, press 'Home' button, after that select the 'OBD2 Diagnostics' section.
Step 2 – Select 'Live Data' function

Select the ‘Live Data' item to view your vehicle's Live Data or PIDs list.

The Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool will show a list of supported parameters as the image.

A 'Communication Error' message will display if the Scan Tool fails to establish communication with the vehicle. In this scenario, the user needs to check the following items:

    • Ensure the vehicle is OBD2 compliant
    • Verify the connection at the DLC, and verify the ignition is 'ON'
    • Turn the ignition 'OFF', wait 5 seconds, then turn it back 'ON' an read the Live Data again

Step 3 - Customizing the Live Data

Firstly, you must in the Live Data function. After that, select the 'Live Data Menu' key and press 'OK' button to access the menu.

Then, select the 'Custom Live Data' item in this menu.

Tick on the box next to each parameter to select the PID you wish to custom. A ‘checkmark’ will be shown to confirm your selection.

Select the 'Done' key to view the real-time value of the PIDs that you selected.

The list of PIDs that you selected will be shown as the image.

To select other PIDs, you can navigate back to the PID selection screen by selecting 'Reselect PIDs'.

Step 4 - Select the ‘Graph’ key to graph all selected PIDs

Select the ‘Graph’ key to display the current PIDs in graphical form.

The Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool Tablet provides the ability to graph a maximum of 4 PIDs with value at a time. It allows you to monitor the changes in PID values more clearly.

The graphs of PIDs that you selected will be shown as the image.

In the graph mode, the Scan Tool allows changing the PID value wishing to be shown by selecting the ‘V’ arrow next to the PIDs name. After that, the Scan Tool shows a PID list for choosing.

Step 5 - Performing the record function

From Live Data, select the ‘Live Data Menu’ key then select 'Record by DTC Trigger' or 'Record Manually' item to record the Live Data.

Select the PID that you want you want to record or select 'Record All PIDs' item to record all supported PIDs. Select 'Done' key to start the record process.

Select the ‘Stop/Save’ key to finish the record function and save the recorded data.

NOTE:The Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector supports recording up to 100 frames. When reaching the 100-frames limit, the Scan Tool finish the record and saves the data automatically.

Select the ‘Yes’ key to finish the record function and review the record data at the moment.

Select the ‘No’ key to finish the record function and go back to the Live Data Menu.

Step 6 - Playback the recorded data

From Live Data, select the ‘Live Data Menu’ key then select 'Playback Live Data' item to view the record data.

The Playback funtion provides two types to view the record data: Continuous Playback and Frame by Frame.

Continuous Playback displays the data record for each frame in a continuous manner, showing the entire record data automatically.

Frame by Frame displays the data record for each frame by selecting the “Next Frame” button, showing the entire record data manually.

NOTE: In the 'Playback Live Data' function, the PID can be shown in the graphical form if this PID is supported.

When viewing recorded Live Data, look for any irregularities in any of the PID values/signal information (LTFT %, RPM, MAP, TEMP, etc.). If any PIDs are not within specification or irregularities are detected, follow the procedures in the vehicle's service repair manual to perform additional troubleshooting and repair.
