What is EPB?

An electronic parking brake, also known as an e-brake or electric parking brake, is a mechanism that is used to secure a parked vehicle in place. Unlike traditional hand-operated parking brakes, which use a mechanical lever and cables to engage the braking system, electronic parking brakes utilize electrical and electronic components to control the application and release of the parking brake.

Instead of pulling a lever or pushing a pedal, an electronic parking brake is engaged or disengaged by pressing a button or a switch. When the button is pressed, an electric motor or actuator applies the brakes by either activating the calipers or engaging a separate drum brake mechanism on the rear wheels. The brake is then released by pressing the button again or by automatically disengaging when the vehicle is put into motion.

One of the advantages of electronic parking brakes is that they eliminate the need for manual adjustment, which is necessary in traditional parking brakes as the brake pads wear down over time. Electronic parking brakes can automatically adjust for pad wear, ensuring consistent and reliable braking performance. Additionally, they often offer additional features such as hill-hold assist and automatic brake hold, which enhance safety and convenience.

Electronic parking brakes are increasingly common in modern vehicles as they provide several benefits including space savings (as they eliminate the need for a physical handbrake lever), improved vehicle styling, and enhanced functionality. However, it's important to note that some older vehicles and certain entry-level models may still utilize traditional mechanical parking brakes.
