Purpose

This article outlines the procedures to diagnose and confirm the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) C1211 on the 2014-2019 Hyundai Elantra and replace the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) Rear-RH to resolve the issue.

Introduction

In cases where the ABS warning light on your vehicle’s dashboard is illuminated and the ABS Control Module has stored DTC C1211 indicates the ABS Control Module has detected that one of the following conditions is present:

  • There are no wheel speed signals within 10ms to 20ms and vehicle speed is greater than 26.8 mph
  • A deviation between sensors exceed the threshold
  • One or two wheels are at 1.7 mph while vehicle speed is at 7.45 mph

The WSS is a critical component in modern automotive braking systems. This sensor is responsible for monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel and relaying this information to the ABS Control Module. By continuously measuring wheel speed and detecting any discrepancies, the ABS WSS helps prevent wheel lockup during braking, enhancing vehicle stability and control, especially in slippery or emergency braking situations.

Symptoms of DTC C1211 include:

  • ABS Warning Light ON

Possible causes of this fault include:

  • Improper installation of WSS
  • Abnormal rotor and wheel bearing
  • Faulty WSS RR

When DTC C1211 is present on a 2014-2019 Hyundai Elantra, replacing the ABS WSS RR may resolve the issue.

Diagnostic Procedures

Initial Inspection:

During your initial inspection, check for obvious signs of mechanical damage such as missing tees and/or, cracked, broken, or disconnected wire harnesses. Make sure all harness connectors are properly placed and secure in the connectors and holders. This will prevent potential open or short-circuit issues. Also, check the connectors for corrosion, frayed wiring, and damaged terminals.

In addition, check tire sizes to be sure they all are the same. Diagnose ABS faults next to repair faults. This fault can be caused by common issues to the ABS Control Module. Refer to the Vehicle Emission Warranty Manual for time and mileage coverage for the emission-related fault(s). For additional information, refer to the Service Manual or applicable Technical Service Bulletin (TSB).

Diagnostic Procedures:

1. Inspect the ABS WSS

a. Using a Scan Tool, access the Live Data (LD) function. Monitor the vehicle speed value, and observe the speedometer while driving.
- If no vehicle speed is displayed, proceed to Step 1b.
- If the vehicle speed is displayed on both the Scan Tool and speedometer, check for intermittent loss. Perform Repair Validation.

b. Access the ABS LD function. Monitor the wheel speed value, and observe the speedometer while driving.
- If no wheel speed is displayed, proceed to Step 1c.
- If the wheel speed is displayed, proceed to Step 1d.

c. Turn the ignition to the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) position. Connect a Digital Multimeter (DMM) to two Pins of the WSS connector. Switch the DMM to the frequency position. Spin the wheel while monitoring the frequency. The frequency should rise and fall with the speed of the wheel.
- If the frequency does not follow this pattern, inspect the toothed ring before replacing the WSS. Perform Repair Validation.
- If the frequency rises and falls with the speed of the wheel, proceed to Step 1d.

d. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Disconnect the ECM connector and ABS connector. Use a DMM to check the wiring between Pin 64 (White - AT) or Pin 46 (White – MT) on the ECM connector and Pin 27 (Pink) on the ESC connector for short to power, short to ground, or open circuit. Perform Repair Validation.

Replace WSS

Removal

Step 1 – Loosen the wheel nuts slightly. Use a jack to raise the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported on jack stands.

Step 2 – Remove the rear wheel and tire from the front hub.

Step 3 – Disconnect the rear WSS connector.

Step 4 – Loosen the bolt and then remove the hub bearing.

Installation:

Installation is accomplished in the reverse order of removal.

Repair Validation:

  • Clear DTC(s) and Free Frame (FF) information.
  • Perform the KOEO and Key ON Engine RUNNING (KOER) tests or follow the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD2) drive cycle requirements for the fault area.
  • Optionally, operate the vehicle within the conditions recorded in the FF data.
  • Check for pending or stored DTC(s). If none are found, the repair is complete.
