Innova 7111: How to Perform An Actuator Test

Purpose

To guide users on how to perform an Actuator Test with the Innova 7111 Scan tool.

Introduction

The Actuator Test, also called Active Test, is a function of the scan tool used when the user wants to check the operation of an actuator. In this function, the scan tool will ask the control unit to command an actuator, such as a relay, valve, solenoid, or component to see if it's actually performing its duty.

This example shows how to check the cooling fan on a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu using the Active Test function on the Innova 7111 Scan tool.

The cooling fan control module receives a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM) to enable cooling fan operation at variable speeds. During normal operating conditions the ECM only operates the cooling fan at 4 or 5 % and then increases, as needed, to prevent undesirable noise and vibration, and to satisfy powertrain cooling requirements.

Procedure

Step 1: Connect the Innova 7111 Scan Tool.

Turn on the ignition but do not start the vehicle.
Connect the Innova 7111 scan tool to the vehicle via the OBD2 DLC connector. Once connected, the tool automatically retrieves the vehicle’s VIN, year/make/model, and odometer readings.
Continue by tapping 'OEM Diagnostics'.

Step 2: Select "ECM - Engine Control Module"

The Scan tool lists all available systems in your vehicle.
Next, find and select "ECM - Engine Control Module"

Once the tool successfully links to the ECM, the Scan tool display all available diagnostic functions, including: Read DTCs, Erase DTCs, Live Data, Actuator Test, and Special Test.
Tap the Actuator Test button to proceed.

Step 3: Choose the function to perform.

The scan tool displays the available list of functions under the Actuator Test.
Select "Cooling Fan" to check the performance of the cooling fan – it may take a few moments to retrieve its results.

Step 4: Select the controlled state of the fan to check the performance of the cooling fan.

There are five controlled states of the cooling fan on the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu. You may activate the cooling fan from state 1 to state 5 to adjust the fan and check the performance.
Command state 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 operates the cooling fan operates at approximately 18%, 54%, 67%, 85%, 90%.

Step 5: Select 'State 1' or any state as needed to satisfy powertrain cooling requirements.

Selecting 'State 1', the tool displays 'Commanded state: 1' on the screen.
Use the scan tool to increase/ decrease from state 1 to state 5 and back to state 1. Verify the component operation – it should turn On.

Step 6: Select "Release Control".

Select "Release Control", and the tool displays "Commanded state: None".  Verify the component’s operation – it should turn Off.

Step 7: Select "Exit" to leave the function.

Select "Exit" button to complete the Actuator Test function.
