Innova 7111: Troubleshooting Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) Connector Errors

Possible Issues:

If your INNOVA ® 7111 Scan Tool is experiencing one or more of the issues listed below, follow the troubleshooting steps listed in this document:

  • The tablet crashed and is now stuck on a rebooting cycle.
  • The tablet displays a “VCI not detected” error message.
  • After updating the table’s firmware/software, the home screen experiences glitches with the OBD2 Diagnostics/ OEM Diagnostic/ Workshop selection tabs.
  • The OBD2 Diagnostics/ OEM Diagnostics/ Workshop selection tabs are grayed out while the VCI is connected to the tablet.
  • The Date and Time are not correct on your 7111 tablet, in which case you need to change the date and time to the current time and save the adjustment. Reminder: Your battery needs to be above 50% in order to complete an update.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Step 1 – If you are plugged into the DLC, disconnect the tool from the vehicle’s DLC.

Step 2 – Remove the VCI from the Tablet

  • To remove the VCI, with a bit of force, push upward from the bottom portion of the VCI connector to release it from the tablet.

Step 3 - Turn Off the Tablet

  • To power off the tablet, hold the power button for approximately 3 seconds.
  • The screen displays the Power Off and Restart icons. Tap the Power Off button.

Note: The tablet is considered completely powered down once the screen goes dark.

Step 4 - Check the VCI’s Connector and Pogo Pins

  • Dirty connectors may cause VCI detection and connection issues. To clean the connectors and pogo pins, use alcohol wipes or the wire brush to remove any dirt and grime that might have collected during use.

Step 5 - Reconnect and Power On the Tablet

  • Slide the VCI connector into the tablet to reattach it. You will hear a click once the connector is fully engaged.
  • Power ON the tablet by pressing and holding the power button for approximately 3 seconds.
  • While the tablet powers up, the screen displays the INNOVA® logo with a “Loading...” message.

Step 6 - Successful Connection Confirmation

  • If the VCI was successfully detected, the tablet’s Home screen will display without glitches or error messages.
  • Another way to confirm a good connection is to look for the tablet’s VCI information under the Settings page.
