Innova 7111: Freeze Frame Data

Purpose

To explain how to view your Freeze Frame data using the Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet.

Introduction

The Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet Tablet lets you access vehicle data recorded by the onboard computerat the moment when a fault is detected by the engine management system. This information is called ‘Freeze Frame Data’. The Freeze Frame Data feature displays a list of Parameter Identifiers (PIDs) such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, and throttle position, among others, which can be helpful in identifying the root cause of a vehicle system problem or fault. Mechanics can use this information to diagnose and troubleshoot problems with a vehicle's systems and components.

The article about Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will help you learn and understand DTCs better.

Procedure

Step 1 - Connect the Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet to the vehicle and select 'OBD2 Diagnostics'

  • First, connect the Innova 7111 Scan Tool Tablet to your vehicle via the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) to retrieve the vehicle's information such as Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model.

Then, select the function 'OBD2 Diagnostics'.

Step 2 – Check the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) DTC and Freeze Frame

  • The main reason a vehicle will fail an emissions inspection is a problem in the emissions system.

The red MIL ON status icon indicates a problem with emissions. The data provided by Freeze Frame Data or Failure Records can be useful when determining the cause of a DTC. These records indicate what occurred when the DTC was entered into the ECM memory.

Select the 'Freeze Frame' button to view Freeze Frame Data.

Step 3 - View the result

  • The data results will be shown a table (as seen in the image).

Freeze Frame Data eliminates guesswork and provides a clear and accurate picture of the vehicle's condition, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and unnecessary repairs. Each Freeze Frame Parameter in a generic OBD2 has its own significance in quickly identifying the source of faults. Examples:

    • ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) gives a reading of the temperature of the engine’s coolant.
    • MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) gives the pressure inside the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine.
    • Calc Load (Calculated Load) is a percentage value based on airflow and engine speed.
  • Freeze Frame Data enables cost-effective repairs by providing accurate and efficient diagnoses, thus avoiding excessive parts replacements or labor expenses.
