Innova 7111: Perform the Steering Angle Sensor Calibration function

Purpose

This article provides instructions to perform Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) calibration using the Innova 7111 Scan Tool.

NOTE: Procedures provided in this article are specific to the 2013 Nissan Altima. These procedures may differ somewhat between vehicle makes and models.

Introduction

The Steering Angle Sensors (SAS) play a crucial role in the proper operation of modern vehicle control and safety features such as the Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC) as well as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). These systems rely on accurate input from the Steering Angle Sensor for proper operation.

Steering Angle Sensor calibration is necessary following wheel alignment, collision repairs, or replacement of components that can alter the toe and thrust angle, as these conditions can affect the accuracy of the sensor.

Calibration of the Steering Angle Sensor ensures that related systems receive an accurate indication of steering wheel position and movement to enable them to make necessary corrections. Failure to calibrate the steering angle sensor may result in improper operation of the Vehicle Stability Control System and may ultimately result in the deactivation of the system.

Procedure

Step 1 - Connect the Scan Tool to the vehicle

  • First, connect the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool to your vehicle via the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) connector to retrieve the vehicle's information, such as Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model.
  • Then, select the function Workshop Tools.

Step 2 - Select 'SAS Reset'

  • NOTE: Available functions vary between vehicle makes and models.
  • The Workshop Tools screen shows a list of available functions for your vehicle.
  • Select SAS Reset or Steering Angle Sensor Reset as appropriate.

Step 3 - Select 'Steering Angle Sensor Adjustment'

  • Select Steering Angle Sensor Adjustment to begin the calibration procedure.

Step 4 - Follow the instructions shown on the Scan Tool

  • IMPORTANT: BE SURE the steering wheel is in the “neutral” position (with the vehicle’s wheels facing straight ahead) for the duration of the procedure.
  • The Scan Tool displays one or more “informational/ instructional” screens.
  • Perform the calibration procedures as directed. Tap Next, as appropriate, to scroll to the next screen.

Step 5 - Wait for calibration to complete

  • The Scan Tool begins communication with the vehicle to perform calibration. DO NOT move the steering wheel during calibration.
  • One or more “status” screens display while calibration is in process.

Step 6 - Calibration complete

  • When calibration is complete, a “results” screen displays
  • Tap Exit to close the “results” screen and exit the SAS Reset function.
