Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech: Alternator Test
Purpose
To guide you on how to check the alternator status while using the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool.
Introduction
In addition to the battery, the alternator serves as the crucial centerpiece of the automotive electrical system. It not only provides power for charging the vehicle’s battery and supporting other systems but also ensures a consistent supply of electricity for a wide range of components, from the ignition system to the entertainment features. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to ensure the proper functioning of the alternator in all conditions, to prevent unexpected situations while driving.
This article guides you through the process of performing the Alternator Test function while using the SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool.
Procedure
Step 1 - Connect Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool to the vehicle and select 'Workshop Tools' function
- First, connect the Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool to your vehicle via the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) connector to retrieve the vehicle's information, such as Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model.
- Then, select the 'Workshop Tools' section.
Step 2 – Perform the Alternator Test
- The Innova SDS50 SDS-Tech Tablet Scan Tool shows the list of functions available for your vehicle. To initiate the Transmission Reset, choose the 'Battery/Alternator Test’ item from the list.
- In the Battery/Alternator Test menu, select the ‘Alternator Test’ item to enter the Alternator Test function.
Step 3 - Follow the requirements before testing
- Initially, start the engine and turn on the headlights. Ensure that your vehicle meets the requirements; otherwise, you will not be able to proceed. Then, select the 'Continue' softkey and then press ‘OK’ button to move to the next step.
Step 4 – Increase the engine speed to meet the requirements
- Upon selecting the 'Continue'button in the preceeding step, a screen appears on the Scan Tool as in the image.
- Subsequently, keep the accelerator pedal pressed to maintain engine speed above 2000 RPM for 20 seconds to assess the alternator's status.
- NOTE: A countdown timer indicates ongoing processing.
Step 5 – Run the engine at the idle speed
- Turn OFF the headlights, let the engine run at idle speed, and refer to the following screen for the alternator status display.
Step 6 – View the result and conclusion
- The Alternator Test function has test results that fall into three categories: Good, Voltage High, and Voltage Low.
- For Good status, the charging voltage meets the specifications; the alternator and the charging system are working well.
- For a Voltage High status, the charging voltage is not within the normal range. This could indicate a problem with the alternator or charging system components. To ensure proper functioning of your charging system, inspect it for any defects or have it inspected at a certified repair center.
- For a Voltage Low status, the charging voltage is higher or lower than the safe limit, which may harm the battery or other electrical components. To avoid damage, check your charging system, alternator, or components, or have them inspected by a certified repair center.
Step 7 – View Alternator Live Data
- Select the ‘Alternator Live Data’ item in the Battery/Alternator Test menu, then press the ‘OK’ button.
- The Alternator Live Data will be shown as the image. The value of the Alternator Live Data provides the information of alternator’s status in real-time, the mechanics or diagnostic technician can use this information in the repair process.
- When you’ve concluded viewing the Alternator Live Data, press the ‘Back’ button to return to the Battery/Alternator Test menu.
