Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector: TPMS Relearn

Purpose

To explain how to relearn the TPMS sensors while using the Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool.

Introduction

Tire Pressure Relearning is a crucial maintenance procedure that is required for vehicles equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The TPMS module of a vehicle registers or relearns the unique ID of each wheel's TPMS sensor and its associated wheel. This relearning process is necessary whenever a sensor is replaced or when changing the tire position, ensuring that the new sensor ID or the new sensor ID for that specific wheel location is properly registered in the vehicle's TPMS module. Several methods to perform a tire pressure relearn are used depending on the vehicle make and model and the type of TPMS system installed. The Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool lets you access the procedure or On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) process for resetting the TPMS sensor.

Procedure

Step 1 - Connect Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool to the vehicle and select the 'Workshop Tools' function

  • First, connect the Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool to your vehicle via the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) to retrieve the vehicle's information, such as VIN and On-Board Diagnostic (OBD2) information.
  • From the 'OBD2 Control Display' screen, press the 'Home' button, and after that select the ‘Workshop Tools' section.

Step 2 - Select ‘TPMS Relearn’ feature

  • The Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool offers a range of features, including 12 Service Reset functions, as well as the Vehicle Inspection and Battery/Alternator Test functions, as illustrated in the image. To initiate the procedure or On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) process for relearning the TPMS sensor, you can choose the ‘TPMS Relearn' item from the list.
  • The Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool supports two types of TPMS Relearn:
    • TPMS Relearn Procedure
    • TPMS Relearn OBD

1. Relearn Procedure

  • Select the TPMS Relarn Procedure, the details relearn procedures will display on the Tablet Scan Tool. Ensure that your vehicle meets the requirements listed, read, and follow the procedures to perform relearn TPMS sensor.

2. On-Board Diagnostic Relearn

  • From the TPMS Relearn menu, select the ‘TPMS Relearn OBD’ function then press ‘OK’ button to perform.
  • Select the function you wish to perform, then press ‘OK’ button. In this case, select ‘Tire Pressure Sensor Learn' item.
  • NOTE: The name of the TPMS Relearn function varies by manufacturer, year and model.
  • Follow the instructions provided to perform ‘Tire Pressure Sensors Learn’ process. Select ‘Next’ softkey and press ‘OK’ button to go to the next step.
  • The Scan Tool shows the current data of the vehicle with ‘Command State: None’ - meaning the function is not performed on this vehicle.
  • Select 'Learn' softkey and press ‘OK’ button to perform the function.
  • Waiting for the Scan Tool to communicate with the vehicle to perform the function.
  • After that, the Scan Tool shows the ‘Command State: Learn’ - meaning the function is performed on this vehicle.
  • To finish, choose Back to return to the TMPS Relearn Menu, then press ‘Back’ button to return to the Workshop Tools screen.

Summary

If you replace a sensor, component, or battery in a modern vehicle, the control module might trigger the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). Additionally, the new part may not synchronize with the stored value in the ECU, causing the vehicle to run in 'Limp home' mode. To prevent this from happening, you can use a Scan Tool to reset or relearn the value of the new part. This procedure is applicable to the 'TPMS Relearn’ function when using the Innova SDS43 SDS-Inspector Tablet Scan Tool, which also supports several other manufacturers.
