Innova SD35 SD-Advisor: Alternator Test

Purpose

To guide you on how to check the alternator status while using the Innova SD35 SD-Advisor Tablet Scan Tool.

Introduction

In addition to the battery, the alternator serves as the crucial centerpiece of the automotive electrical system. It not only provides power for charging the vehicle’s battery and supporting other systems but also ensures a consistent supply of electricity for a wide range of components, from the ignition system to the entertainment features. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to ensure the proper functioning of the alternator in all conditions, to prevent unexpected situations while driving.

This article guides you through the process of performing the Alternator Test function while using the SD35 SD-Advisor Tablet Scan Tool.

Procedure

Step 1 - Connect the Innova SD35 SD-Advisor Tablet Scan Tool to the vehicle and select the 'Workshop Tools' function.

  • First, connect the Innova SD35 SD-Advisor Tablet Scan Tool to your vehicle via the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) connector to retrieve the vehicle's information.
  • Then, select the 'Workshop Tools' section.

Step 2 – Select Alternator Test.

  • The list of functions available for your vehicle is shown on the screen. To initiate the Transmission Reset, select Battery/Alternator Test, then press OK.
    • The Battery/Alternator Test menu will display.
  • Then, select Alternator Test and press OK.
    • An “instructional” message will show.

Step 3 - Follow the requirements.

  • Start and warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Turn on the headlights. Select Continue to proceed, and follow the "instructional” message as shown on the screen.
  • Press the accelerator pedal to raise the engine speed to 2000 RPM and maintain the engine speed.
    • When engine speed is within the required range, the alternator test begins. A progress screen will show.
    • When the “countdown” timer expires, an “instructional” message will display.
  • Turn the vehicle’s headlights off and return the engine to idle speed.
    • A “One moment please…” message will display while the test results are retrieved.

Step 4 – View the result and conclusion.

  • When the alternator check is complete, a results screen shows charging system voltage and indicates whether the charging system is within acceptable limits.
  • Select Back if you wish to return to the Battery/Alternator Test menu.

Step 5 - View Alternator Live Data.

Note: If the EV/HEV/PHEV Battery Health, Battery/Alternator Test is selected from the Workshop Tools screen and the vehicle is not an electric or hybrid vehicle, the Battery/Alternator Monitor menu displays.

  • Under Workshop Tools, select Battery/Alternator Test, then press OK.
    • The Battery/Alternator Test menu will display.
  • Select Alternator Live Data, then press OK.
    • The Alternator Live Data screen will display.
