Innova 5610: Throttle Body Relearn

A Throttle Body Relearn is a calibration process that teaches a car's computer the closed position and baseline parameters of its electronic throttle valve. Support for Throttle Body Relearn will depend on the year, make, model, and engine size of vehicle: https://www.innova.com/pages/coverage

Why It Is Needed

Modern cars use "drive-by-wire" systems where an electronic signal replaces the physical cable connecting the gas pedal to the engine. Over time, carbon builds up around the throttle plate, and the engine control module (ECM) makes tiny adjustments to keep the idle steady. When you clean or replace the throttle body—or disconnect the car battery—the computer keeps using those old, incorrect settings.
You likely need a relearn if your car shows these symptoms:
  • Idles too high or bounces up and down
  • Stalls when coming to a stop
  • Feels rough or sluggish while idling

NOTE: You can also find Throttle Body Relearn in the ECM(or PCM) under Special Functions.

Step 1 - Press the M Button

  • To navigate to the Service Check feature, press the M button.

Step 2 - Select Service Reset

  • Select Service Reset.

Step 3 - Select Throttle Relearn/TEC Learn

  • Select Throttle Body Relearn/TEC Learn.
  • Select PCM - Powertrain Control Module.
  • Press the Back button to return to previous screen.

Step 4 - Throttle Body Relearn Procedure & Reset KAM

  • Throttle Body Relearn Procedure & Reset KAM (Keep Alive Memory) will display.
  • Before performing the Throttle Body Relearn Procedure, resetting the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) first is standard practice before performing a complete idle or throttle relearn, as it clears old adaptive learning data and lets the computer start fresh from base factory settings
  • Press the Back button to return to the previous screen.

Step 5 - Reset KAM (Keep Memory Alive)

Why Reset KAM First?

  • Clears old data: Old memory contains outdated throttle position offsets, carbon buildup compensation, and driving habits.
  • Starts fresh: A clean slate allows the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to accurately map the new or cleaned throttle body limits.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Press the Continue button to proceed to the next steps.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • The 5610 will state if the process of Resetting KAM was successful or not.
  • Press the Exit button when finished.
